The Craft
of David Nukri
Abkhazia · Moscow · Copenhagen · 22 Years
David Nukri sits in his Frederiksberg studio, scissors in hand — the same hands that have been shaping hair for over two decades. Born in Abkhazia, trained in Moscow, refined in France and Italy, now rooted in Copenhagen. A journey across continents, cultures, and countless transformations.
Where It Began
Abkhazia is a small region on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, nestled between the Caucasus Mountains and the sea. A place of dramatic landscapes and ancient culture — and it's where David Nukri's story begins.
"I grew up watching people transform," he recalls. "Not just their hair, but their entire presence. The way they carried themselves after a good cut. That fascinated me."
His early training in Abkhazia laid the foundation for what would become a 22-year career spanning three countries. The attention to detail. The understanding that every client is unique.
It was this foundation that would carry him to Moscow's high-end salons, where technique was refined and reputation was built — and later to France and Italy, where he completed advanced professional training.
The Refinement Years
Moscow in the 2000s was a city of extremes. Wealth, ambition, and an uncompromising demand for excellence. For a young hairstylist from Abkhazia, it was the perfect proving ground.
"Moscow clients don't accept mediocrity," David explains. "Every cut had to be perfect. Every color had to be exactly right. There was no room for error."
It was during these years that he mastered balayage and airtouch — techniques that would define his signature approach. But the pursuit of knowledge didn't stop there. David went on to complete advanced professional training in France and Italy, studying under leading educators in European hair culture.
These experiences gave him a rare combination: technical rigour from the East, and the refined aesthetic sensibility of Western Europe.
Abkhazia
Many of my clients ask where I'm from. The name Abkhazia is unfamiliar to most — so I decided to share a little about it here, for those who are curious.
It is a place most have never heard of — but one I carry with me in everything I do.
A New Beginning
In 2014, David made the decision to relocate to Copenhagen. A new country. A new language. A new market. But the same dedication to craft.
He established his studio in Frederiksberg, one of Copenhagen's most charming neighborhoods — and quickly noticed something about Danish clients. They love long hair. Beautiful, healthy, long hair. But finding someone who could truly cut it — with movement, with life — was difficult.
Danish women want length, but they also want their hair to do something. To flow. To have dimension. And that is precisely what Butterfly Layers delivers. The technique creates natural movement and volume without sacrificing a single centimetre of length — which is why clients in Copenhagen seek it out by name.
"People come to me specifically asking for Butterfly Layers," David says. "They've done their research. They know what they want — hair that feels alive. That's what I give them."
